The song that has come to be known in south Louisiana as "Sept ans sur mer" is a French variant of a well-known narrative song with Norwegian, Swiss, Spanish, Icelandic, and Danish analogues. The song is particularly well-known in Portugal and Brazil, where it is known as "A Nau Catarineta" and performed to this day, often as part of a dramatic dance (see below).
